Four sweet school kids on a motorbike
Your sight is not quadrupled!
Yes, you are seeing right: one rider and 4 (four) children. This is daily life in the Dominican Republic: to save the fare on the way to school four studens share a ride on a motoconcho. The fare is 20 RD$ to 30 RD$ and the savings can be spent on ice cream in this hot country. The stunned travellers grab for photo cameras, but the kids want some reward. Buy them some sweets, don't be stingy.

Police in the Dominican Republic
Police in the Dominican Republic

While the press reports cases of police corruption in the Dominican Republic, a brighter picture can be seen on the streets from time to time. On this photo a policeman helps students to cross a busy street in the Dominican Republic.
Certainly a much needed hand, as reckless driving continues to flourish across the country

Haitian shoe polish makes only RD$ 15 per job in the D.R.
The surviviors of the earthquake from Haiti
Natenael, a haitian boy of 15 lost all his family and now lives in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, his shack just behind the gas station. He went to school for 5 years and can even write his name. You can see his only home on the picture. He works as a shoe polish, earning 15 RD$ per job. Some generous clients give him 20. The other picture shows him with all the tools he needs for the job. He cooks his food behind the shack. To eat, he buys rice (RD$ 30 a pound), eggs (RD$ 5 each), cooking bananas (RD$ 4 each).
Asked what he needs most he replies: “a birth certificate. Then I could buy a house”.
Many tourists see those shoe cleaners in the D.R. Be generous with them.

Holes in Pavements in the Dominican Republic
Black holes under your feet
Watch your step while walking the pavements in the Dominican Republic. Night AND day. Thiefs steal the sewage taps from pedestrian pavements and you might suddenly fall into something you don't really want. This picture was taken in Puerto Plata (January 2010) in one of the main avenues connecting the city with Playa Dorada beach resort.
