Cuba: 3.3 percent growth in tourism for 2009
Manuel Marrero, Cuban Tourism Minister announced a 3.3% growth for 2009. 2 425 000 visitors are reported for this year.
The biggest source market of tourists to the island remains Canada (900 000), followed by the UK and Spain.
Private Homestays (Bed & Breakfast) are preferred mostly by european travellers.
Two thousand new rooms were completed in 2009 in the major tourist centers, most in Havanna.
200 000 workers are employed in the Cuba's tourism industry. New investments are planned in Varadero, Guardalavaca, Cayo Coco, Trinidad and Havana. The planning includes new golf courses.
