Relojito Agosto: a popular myth turned fashion in the Dom Rep
If you are Dominican, this watch looks familiar to you:
Last year (2010) Figueroa Agosto has been accused of smuggling drugs on a grand scale. Perhaps he will be found guilty, perhaps not. Drugs are not good to your health. We've been telling this to US consumers for years. US consumers, however, don't care about the warnings from Caribation. Their money continues to flow in and thus contributes to the growth of the Dominican economy. People on the street know it, intuitively. Not few owe jobs to American consumers. Car mechanics who fix those sexy jipetas (Spanish for SUV) or construction technicians who raise those magnificent ocean view condos will all perish the day America wins the war on drugs. We don't know when it happens though. Figueroa Agosto, himself a US citizen, has been nominated by vox populi a Robin Hood of the Dominican Republic. His story is known to everyone in the country. If a new cafeteria opens up for business, guess what name will patronize it? Sobeida, of course, a girlfriend of Agosto. They are a Bonnie and Clyde couple of XXI century. And then, a few months ago, came the watches. Relojito Agosto (Agosto watch). Just walk the streets of Santo Domingo or Santiago and check yourself how many people are wearing this model. Fascination? Admiration? Solidarity? Agosto himself might have carried $80.000 Rolexes, the Relojito costs RD$ 350 (less then $10). Popular price, popular myth, popular vote. The watch tells it all.

Slightly different watches28 confiscated luxury watches of Figureoa Agosto and his female companion Sobeida were offered on public auction in Santo Domingo on January 4th, 2012. 27 were sold for the the total of RD$ 23,700,000 (US$ 624,000 approx.), averaging US$ 23,100 per watch. Only one watch, valued at US$ 44,000 was left unsold. State prosecutor, Radhaméz Jimenez Peña, is now asking to cancel the auction altogether. His argument: the age of the buyers. Five persons who purchased the precious pieces were 27 and 28 years old. Dominican press, Hoy, is now speculating, where the money came from and whether the true reason to buy was pure fascination of the young investors with the previous owners or a criminal intent of money laundering. 2011-01-02 00:00 |
