Riding the subway in Santo Domingo
Carritos too dirty? Busses too crowded? Taxis too expensive? Try Santo Domingo metro (subway, tube) at RD$20 a ride (less then US$ 0.50).The city can be proud of its new (and only) North-South subway line. East-West line is under construction. The trains are modern, air conditioned and clean, almost identical as the newer lines of Metro de Madrid and much better then the older cars in the spanish capital. Security guards are present both on the platforms and in the trains. Smoking, food and drink is a no-go all across the system. The southern half of the route goes underground, the northern on outer space giving you some idea of the city outside of tourists routes. In the southern part one station is right in front of the Teatro Nacional. In the north metro crosses the River Ozama Each station has a sculpture at entry. Our favourite is the gun. As a regular passanger you can buy an electronic multiple ticket card. But if you want only one ride, a ticket will be written out for you. That's right, you come to the counter, pay 20 pesos and a very nice lady will give you a hand-written souvenir: a ticket to Santo Domingo Subway (tube). Just have a look. Update November 2011: no more hadwritten tickets are issued. Now you need to buy a modern plastic card with digital credit on it. The card costs $RD 50 and this includes already one trip. You can upload the card with more credit at any time. The price remains unchanged at $RD 20 per trip. Each passenger is required to posess his own plastic ticket. See below how it looks:

The second line of Metro (East-West) will be opened in Santo Domingo by the Presiedent on February, 27th, 2012. He is supposed to take a ride himself. |
